Rumola

$
0
0

Rumola is a new application. It takes the guesswork out of the CAPTCHA test. Rumola reads the letters and numbers and puts them in the box for you. Open an account and download Rumola for a free test - you can run Rumola ten times (one week) to prove it works. If you are satisfied, the first $0.99/$1.95 into the account buys you 60/160 credits where one credit = one input in a CAPTCHA box. Credit units are limited by time and will expire if they are unused! Thereafter, buy credits as you need them.

Ideally, we ensure you can navigate the Internet as if there are no CAPTCHA tests. Rumola finds CAPTCHAs automatically, starts the recognition process and alerts you when the tests have been solved. To empower you as a blind or visually-impaired person, a voiceover notification system has been added. There are three important warnings:

  1. Before the recognition process is completed, please do not touch or change the box containing the text field to which the CAPTCHA solution must be written! This immediately stops the Rumola application from working on the current page.
  2. The extension automatically recognizes one captcha per page. If, for any reason, Rumola's captcha solution is cancelled and a new captcha test is loaded in the page, the second must be asked manually.
  3. Sometimes it will happens that Rumola will be failed to find correct CAPTCHA image and text field to enter a solution. In that cases remember that you can always use the context menu to select the correct CAPTCHA image and the text field where the characters are to be entered.
Finally, note that Rumola will initiate the CAPTCHA recognition process as soon as you start filling in other form fields on a page or once you double-click the CAPTCHA entry field as defined by Rumola. Currently Rumola works with the Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari browsers.

Is a Blind User the Best Person to Tell you if an iOS App is Any Good?

$
0
0

The fact that this question is being posted on a website for blind iOS users means that you should already be able to hazard a shrewd guess at my likely answer. However, before we head towards that seemingly inevitable conclusion, I should begin by acknowledging that the answer is always going to be heavily dependant upon comparative levels of knowledge and experience. So, if given the choice between an experienced iOS user or a novice, you should probably always go with the former, regardless of any differences in their visual acuities.

There are a number of other caveats, assumptions and conditions which are also worth getting out of the way early on. The first - if the app in question isn't accessible with VoiceOver ... well, with the best will in the world, I'm not going to be the best person to ask how good it is. I might argue that its inaccessibility makes it an extremely poor app, but that opinion won't be based upon how good the app is at actually doing what it's supposed to do or how satisfying is the user experience that it provides in the process for the majority of its users.

There are also apps in the App Store where style, appearance or visuals are more important than functionality, and again I'm not going to be the best person to judge their merits. But, I would guess that apps where style and visual design matter more than function are likely to be few and far between. Or, perhaps I only believe this to be the case because these aren't the kind of apps, unsurprisingly, that I go looking for.

This doesn't mean that I believe interesting and imaginative visual design doesn't matter. It doesn't matter to me, but for mainstream users it will have some bearing upon the overall user experience. I'll compare this to reaching into my kitchen drawer for a utensil, when my hand will invariably be drawn towards those which feel like they have been designed with passion and vision. Although equally suited for a task, the more utilitarian options will sit at the back of that drawer, untouched and unloved.

However, despite acknowledging that the visual aesthetics of an app can improve the overall user experience, I also have to argue that my lack of awareness or appreciation for these things means that I am not easily distracted by them. Unlike the crying baby, I'm not going to be pacified and satisfied by somebody simply waving a shiny object in my face. Or, in this case, the app developer who wants to show off their visual design abilities.

And, now, we are finally getting close to an answer to my original question. Once all of the above disclaimers are accepted, and I sit back to explore and use an app, I do believe that having to rely on VoiceOver places me in a far better position than most sighted users to judge whether that app is actually any good.

I won't be distracted by any eye candy, and the nature of my exploration of the app and its features can be described as almost forensic in nature. I'll spend time exploring the interface with my finger, and with the aid of VoiceOver (assuming that the developer has provided concise and helpful labelling and hints) I will form an understanding and appreciation that probably goes far beyond that of most sighted users. Using VoiceOver forces me to think about each swipe and tap, and question whether this could be more efficient and effective. Is this the quickest way to get from A to B? Does each step along the way make sense? Is it a satisfying user experience?

What I am trying to say, is that as a blind user, I can't rely on a quick glimpse at the screen. I need to explore every pixel of the screen with my finger and VoiceOver to be sure that I locate all that is present, know what everything does, and therefore appreciate how satisfying or frustrating the user experience is.

I have no hesitation, therefore, in concluding that using VoiceOver gives me a thorough appreciation and awareness of the quality of an app's interface, its functionality and the overall user experience. Would a sighted user be able to say the same? In most cases, I doubt it.

I would love to hear if others believe that VoiceOver makes you a better judge of the merits of an app. Or do I simply possess an over-inflated opinion of how I use iOS compared to my sighted peers?

Multiple Twitter accounts on iPhone

Hello,

I use an iPhone 5 and have 2 twitter accounts. I know how to tweet and manage multiple accounts from the twitter app, but if you want to tweet from Siri or notification centre, does anyone know how to chose which account you tweet from? Both accounts are in Twitter settings, but it will only let me tweet from the first account I added.
Any help on how to tweet from a different Twitter account through iOS would be apreciated.
Thanks.
Callum.

Other Comments

This drama is quite good. In the app, the first four episodes are free, but an in-app purchase of three bucks unlocks the other four. I've spent my money on dramas that were worse than this, so the four episodes are a nice way to get you into the main story. Plus, it features actors from shows like DS9, Stargate, among others.

App Accessibility Please Read

Hey Guys,

I am writing this post hoping to get signatures and feedback from you to send to Apple.

I really think that Apple should consider an accessibility rating for apps in the App Store. I'm starting this conversation not to slam Apple. We all know they dedicate the time to accessibility. I am writing this in frustration to the lack of support from developers.

There is no excuse anymore for an app not to be accessible. apple even provides certain tools for developers to make apps accessible. I think that developers should see some sort of accessibility rating to maybe embarrass them. If it is there for everyone to see, maybe they will implement needed changes.

I understand that there are developers who are dedicated to this cause. I however know I also send extensive emails to developers with no response. I also find it quite demeaning when I write the itunes store asking for a credit. Explaining the lack of accessibility in an app which is in their store. I'm not talking about partially inaccessible apps. We all know that there are some that aren't perfect, but you work around it. We all however have run into some which made no effort.

I think that a score maybe 1 to 5 would be perfect. From not accessible at all to completely accessible. Would you please help me in making Apple consider this. After receiving your responses, I'll pass this on to Apple. Thank you for taking a couple of minutes to do this.
Regards, JP

AVG Family Safety® is a free, secure, family-friendly Web Browser, which helps protect your children from inappropriate websites, while also keeping your whole family safe from scam, fraud, phishing and potentially malicious online content.

NEW!
We’ve just added AVG’s Do Not Track, which helps you identify which websites are collecting data on you and your family when you use Apple mobile devices, and gives you control over whether to allow tracking of your family’s online activities.
This new privacy feature is in addition to the existing security and parental control features of AVG Family Safety, which come on top of the built-in mobile security provided by Apple® for your iOS® device. AVG Family Safety will block sites that you may not wish your children to see when they are surfing the web on an iPhone®, iPad® or iPod touch®, and also help prevent your family visiting malicious websites that try to misuse personal data.

By downloading and using AVG Family Safety’s secure browser, as an alternative to Safari®, you can take steps to ensure:
•You and your family only visit safe websites. Websites that are known to be malicious or contain scams or malware will be blocked, using data provided by AVG’s LinkScanner® technology. You will be notified and prevented from accessing the suspicious website.
•Your children are protected from mature and inappropriate content. Sites that are deemed inappropriate will be blocked, with the category displayed on screen.

•You and your family are able to identify which websites are collecting data on your online activities and gives you the choice on whether to allow it.

AVG Family Safety works just like other web browsers, and features:

•Browser history of websites visited
•Bookmarks for favorite websites
•Address bar that hides to maximize screen space
•Works with WiFi and mobile data Internet connections

When you use AVG Family Safety in conjunction with AVG Family Safety PC desktop product, you will also be able to:

•Easily customize the list of allowed and blocked sites
•Monitor the online activity of the different users of your Apple device/s
•Block social networking and other sites (per mobile device)
The AVG Family Safety desktop PC software can be downloaded from: www.avg.com/avg-family-safety?cmpid=mob_ios
In order for AVG Family Safety to work effectively, we recommend locking the use of Safari. To do this, just follow these 3 simple steps:

(1) Open “Settings”
(2) Choose “General”
(3) Choose “Restrictions”. Restrict using safari by dragging the slider under the “Safari” option to “OFF.”

Once other browsers are disabled, links and URLs will be accessible only from AVG Family Safety.

Languages supported: English, Spanish, Czech, Italian and French.

Devices supported: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch.

Another ThumbJam audio tutorial needed please!

$

Hi all,

Could one of you who uses ThumbJam please post an audio tutorial or send it to me by email as to how to create an instrument using ThumbJam's built in instrument creation tool? And also how to set it up so that I can share the instrument with others? I find that the explanation in the manual is not as straight forward to me as it could be. I tried to create a 12 string guitar instrument but it didn't work. I had no problem recording the instrument sound samples, but it's all the details on the .flot and the .flotpatch files that I'm a bit confused with.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to send it to me by email at siena@sienat.tk or if one of you could post it here on AppleVis, that would be even better! :)

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,

Siena.
P.S. I made a suggestion to the developer to post some audio tutorials on the ThumbJam website, since he knows how to use ThumbJam with Voiceover, but we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

AppShopper is back! The same old AppShopper that you had loved in the first place. No doubt one of my top favorite in keeping up to date on all of my apps.

They have returned with a new twist to the app. It is now capable of sharing your apps that you won with your friends. This is something I am really looking forward to. For most of you know that I am a huge app fan and you can now follow me in what apps that I have.

I believe I even saw an area where you can rate your app so that others will know what you think of the app itself. Plus, you must use the desktop portion of the AppShopper to make this more robust and used to the fullest potential.

The AppShopper program on the Microsoft platform is very accessible. It simply scans what app you have on your iTunes and automatically up;oad that information to the database. This prevents from you having to enter every app that you have.

All in all. Two thumbs up from me.

When you install the tweak you will get a springboard icon, which lets you send any file from the filesystem and view your received files. This is fully accessible. It also integrates with system apps under the action/share button if the app, like voice memos or photos has one, or in the case of music it adds "more info" buttons next to each song to start the transfer.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads all page elements.

Button Labelling

All buttons are clearly labelled.

Usability

The app is fully accessible with VoiceOver and is easy to navigate and use.

Other Comments

If you want to receive a file, you'll need to enable receiving. Doing this is done with an activator action which you can change in settings. By default it's double-tapping the status bar (tripple-tap with voiceover). When you have a transfer going you can open the notification center to check on it.
Also the tweak uses its own bluetooth stack. What this means for you is that when you're sending or receiving a file, you first need to turn bluetooth off (it will prompt you to do it if it's on), so you won't be able to use bluetooth headsets or keyboards when sending/receiving files.
Personally, I find this rather useful. I let people take photos with my iPod often and mos of the time they want to get them on their phone, which until now wasn't really possible, but now isn't an issue at all.
There is an app called airblue sharing in the app store, but as far as I can see it's a scam... either that or it only works between iPhones, either way it didn't get all that good reviews. The one I'm talking about is jailbreak only, and you can get it from Cydia, the package is in one of the default repos so you can just search for it. Definitely recommended.

Caffeine 2

From Cydia

Compatible with iOS 4, 5, and 6.

In this completely rewritten version of Caffeine, you get the old functionality of the tweak plus AppList integration… This means, you can choose which apps have autolocking disabled.
So you could either set a global autolock, or Caffeine 1, but the use of Caffeine 1 was very tiring, as every time you were in that app you had to use it, then disable when you got out… And this same thing going further and further…
So imagine you always want Mobile Terminal to have autolocking disabled on it, as you might keep always executing long Terminal commands, so you can just head to Caffeine preferences on Settings app and you can assign Mobile Terminal to Caffeine. It will never autolock while on it (even if Caffeine is off via Activator), and as soon as you head back to Springboard or another app, if Caffeine is disabled via Activator and the app you are currently in has not Caffeine enabled, it will autolock normally.
No new icons are added to your Home screen. Configure Activator actions from your Settings app.

Issues with mail fetching too frequently

Hi all: I finally decided to set up email on my IPhone5 today. I am using my gmail account with the native IPhone email app.
I went in to the settings and disabled push to both save on battery and avoid having my phone constantly going off. I set my fetch time to 30 minutes, which I figured was a decent interval. No sooner did I put the phone down and it started buzzing at me about email. Even though I set the fetch time to 30 minutes, it's pulling mail every 5-10 minutes.
What gives?
Thanks in advance.

Seeking feedback on possible accessibility improvements to AudioStretch

I'm the creator of AudioStretch, and I just discovered this site via Google Alerts. I designed AudioStretch mainly for musicians, for example for transcribing music, and aimed to make it as simple and intuitive as possible. While I never thought of AudioStretch as a tool for empowering blind or low-vision users, intuitive navigation of audio files must be important for that group. So I'm wondering - if you could have an audio playback program created specially for blind or low-vision users, what features & characteristics would you want? Bigger buttons? Voice control? Bookmarks?
