GPS App Most Similar To Trekker Breeze

$
0
0

I just bought an iPhone 5 on eBay. I'm wondering what app or combination of apps comes closest to having the features of the Trekker Breeze. The two features I'm really concerned about is I want the app to be able to record routes like the Breeze does, and I want to be able to record points of interest with my voice. I don't care so much about cost or how much data gets used at this point.

Thanks!

Podcasts app question and overall podcast general question

$
0
0

Hi,
So I downloaded the Apple Podcast app again yesterday, after not using it for awhile, and noticed that you now have to download the podcast versese just streaming it to the phone. I thought at one time, you could stream them instead of downloading them, was I wrong here?
Is there an app like Podcast that gives you the option to stream them, and download them also, but has the same amount of content? Also, when you subscribe to a certain podcast, does it put the podcast in your phone, then you download it, or is it already downloaded for you? What is the best app to use for listening to podcasts, or are they all about the same? Do other apps get their podcasts from different feeds, or does Podcasts strictly get them from the Apple store?
And finally, what's the best way to delete them from the Podcast app? I see the podcast, then recently played, and a few other places where the podcast is at within the app.
Thanks for all help, Shane.

Hello!

I am using Voxer walkie talkie and it works fine. But I have one problem. When I shall talk to anybody I must hold the button down for talk and then release it when I am ready. Now I discovered in later version that I can lock the talk button by sliding it to right, but I can't get it to work with Voiceover. Has anybody solved this problem?

Cannot Move from "Bookshelf Tab to "Help" tab In Read2Go

I have Read2Go on my iPod Touch 5th Generation. I want to read more about how to use Read2Go, particularly with a braille display. I try double tapping on the "Bookshelf" tab, but the words "Next Section Button" pop up on my braille display and the "Bookshelf" tab is still selected.

Any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi. The applevis podcast feed seems to have gone very quiet. There hasn't been a post for a couple weeks so I was curious if there's a backlog of shows that just haven't been posted yet, or if there simply aren't any submitions coming in? Just thought I might ask in hopes someone will see it.
Thanks.

Announcing the AppleVis Editorial App Picks of the Month for August: Ariadne GPS, Instabrowser and Team Stream

$
0
0

At the end of each month the AppleVis Editorial Team take a look at all of the apps which have been posted to the site during that month - either for the first time or where there has been a significant update - and decide which of these we think is the most noteworthy.

Looking at the list of apps which we had to choose from this past month, you can only conclude that developers are either busy preparing for the release of iOS 7 or are simply enjoying summer vacations, as we weren't exactly spoiled for choice - new apps were mostly uninspiring, whilst updates were generally minor.

Fortunately, one significant exception was Ariadne GPS, which saw a rather major update hit the App Store in August.

There's a good probability that you are already aware of Ariadne GPS, as it's an app that many blind users will have in their toolbox of iOS navigation apps. Besides letting you know your current position, Ariadne lets you use your fingers to explore the map and find out what's around you - just put your finger on the screen of your iOS device and as you move your finger across the map VoiceOver will tell you what street you are touching.

If you are planning a trip to somewhere that you are not familiar with, this feature - essentially a talking map - provides a great way to familiarize yourself with the area ahead of time. Just tell Ariadne where you are going, and let your fingers explore the area.

You can ask for information about your current position at any time or the app can be configured to periodically announce this information as you walk or travel. If you add your favorite locations to the app's database, you can be alerted when you get closer than a certain distance to one of these.

Ariadne is a great tool for the blind, and version 4.0 has only made it better. For that reason, it had to be our pick for August.

Another app that we thought noteworthy was Instabrowser, an app that claims to be the fastest web browser for the iPhone.

Inspired by read-it-later apps like Instapaper and Readability, Instabrowser lets you 'read-it-now' by downloading just the HTML of a page and mobilizing it into a clean, one-column layout. The developers claim that this can cut data usage and load times by 90% or more, and is great for when you're on a slow 3G connection or viewing a webpage that doesn't have a mobile layout. It doesn't work with all web sites, so it's not a complete replacement for Safari, but it's an interesting and well-implemented idea,

The third and final app that we thought worthy of a mention is Team Stream - simply pick the sports teams that you are interested in and you will receive real-time streams of news and alerts from all the best sources across the web – local papers, national websites, blogs, Twitter, & Bleacher Report.

Team Stream had already been fairly accessible, but the release of version 2.8 has explicitly addressed the previous problems and made this app a great choice for blind sports fans.

As always, we would love to hear of any apps that you think we have overlooked, so do please post a comment below to share your own personal picks or your thoughts on our choices.

Accessibility Comments

There are parts of this app that are very accessible, and nicely labeled. While I know that the picture of the muscled human would be hard to make accessible, I'm not making a comment about that or the annimations. I found Voice Over to lag a bit on the iPhone 4 when typing information in the fields, and to choose things such as weight and height, it did not have a standard picker but relied on selecting numbers--that did not appear to be in a keypad configuration. I have contacted the developers, but I have not heard back from them yet.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads a few page elements.

Button Labeling

Few buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

There are some accessibility issues with this app, but it can still be used if you are willing to tolerate these issues and learn how to work around them.

Other Comments

I have only had this app for a few hours, and I haven't fully decided if it will help me in planning and tracking workouts yet. I got it because it's what a lot of people at my local gym were using. This review is what I think after a glance. I will update as needed. I know that it works on the iPad as well, but since I don't own one, I don't know if it's a universal app or if there's a separate version for the iPad. The website was unclear on this point.

audio recording and editing app recommendations for mac?

$
0
0

Hi. Just to give a little background, I have been a Windows user for many years, an Ipod Touch user for 2 years, and am a brand new Mac user. I am interested in app recommendations for audio recording and audio editing on the Mac. For anyone familiar with Windows, I would like to find an equivalent to GoldWave. Here's what I hope to accomplish: recording via the internal microphone, recording the system audio, and recording via the line-in jack, but none of those at the same time. I also need to be able to merge and split files, move, copy or delete selected portions of files, and occasionally apply special effects, noise reduction, and volume normalization. Friends have suggested Amadeus, Piezo, and Audio Hijack Pro, as well as Garage Band. I am interested in reading others' experiences with these programs, as well as any other audio recording;/editing app recommendations you might have. This information will assist me with making a decision on which apps to shell out money for. Thank you in advance for your feedback.
